What to do here - Topics of Cabanas

flamingos

Relaxed walks on the shores of the Ria Formosa and the beach are recommendable anytime. Although the variety of water birds, singing birds and migratory birds changes during the year, bird-watching is always interesting here. Watch out in all seasons for flamingos, storks, egrets, stilts, oystercatchers, dunlins, cormorants and others ! These are around most of the time enjoying the magnificent surroundings.
Did you see the new wooden footbridge all along the Ria Formosa?
Or do you know that the Serra dividing the Algarve from the rest of Portugal offers beautiful mountains, valleys, rivers, hiking trails and typical villages to be explored on foot, by bike or of course by car.

Biking  is and was always popular in the sunny Algarve. The " Ecovia ", a bike path of 214 km length along the Coast from the Spanish border to Cabo S. Vicente is partly ready. You may thus bike or walk carefree and enjoy the pure air and the wonderful views as if you were playing golf one on of the luxurious golf courses around here. Ecovia - bicycle track
The winds blow in a different way at Cabanas
From where blows the wind today ? Is it Levante or Norte ? The southern wind from Morocco called the Levante alternates continuously with the wind from the North, sometimes within hours. If the 'Cabaneiros', say "hoje está Levante", you will hear the surf of the sea behind the island as if you were standing right on the beach.
But if they speak of the "Norte" you will hear the train passing with great rattling and you may wake up thinking  you are next to it, although this train passes the railway bridge 1 km to the north of Cabanas.
This phenomenon of alternating winds, sometimes within moments, is quite impressing.
Levante or Norte ?
There are only few Fishermen left at Cabanas, but the Ria is full of boats, not only fisher boats, but also sailing, rowing and motor boats, canoas, come and see !                       Boats in the Ria Formosa

Did you already see the Clam Seakers  looking for eatable clams and crustacean (anybody can try)? They dig for them with their hoes in the mud during low-tide (ameijoas and berbigões) or they stir up the sandy ground of the sea with a funny combination of hook and net (conquilhas). Here at Cabanas you may certainly taste and enjoy eating conquilhas, ameijoas, berbigões .....   shell
